How to Overcome Depression and Anxiety Through God’s Word
Oftentimes, Christians struggle to overcome depression and anxiety and gain recovery because they lose hope in their situations, perspective in life, and more importantly, hope in God. They allow their negative thoughts and emotions to consume them, only focusing on their unhappiness. Unable to consider that God is the ultimate answer to their situation and the Healer and Restorer of all that is lost. For this reason, it is important for Christians who are mentally and emotionally broken, to trust and hope in God for their recovery.

Trust in God’s Healing Powers to Overcome Depression
God’s power can heal and restore you and help you to overcome depression if you trust in Him. David felt depressed at some points in his life but always encouraged himself to continue hoping and trusting in God for deliverance. No matter when God was silent and how long he had to wait. David showed his faithfulness to God and depended on Him for His recovery from depression.
“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And, why art thou disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him who is the health of my countenance, and my God.”
Psalm 43:5
And so, we should follow David’s example and hope and trust in God for our recovery from depression. We must speak to our souls and say that we will “praise God because He is the health of our countenance.” Likewise, let’s consider Job’s personal suffering and endurance for his healing and restoration. He declared that “though He slays me, yet will I trust him.” And this was during a long silence from the Lord.
Therefore, while waiting for our recovery from depression, we must take the right attitude toward our situation, and toward God. We must continue thanking and praising him for the blessings which He has already given us. And allow ourselves to rest in His power and control, and trust His timing. Yes, waiting on God is hard in hopeless situations. But, is there any other way or any other God, with healing powers, from which we can receive complete healing and restoration, besides Christ Jesus?
Trust in God’s Healing Powers to Overcome Anxiety
God called “all who are weak and heavy laden, to come to Me and I will give you rest.” Hence, He wants those struggling with worries and fears, and who are in emotional bondage to come and find comfort in Him. He wants them to find peace and joy in Him. He wants them to trust in His healing powers to deliver them from the mental and emotional stronghold that Satan has placed on them. Only in Jesus can you find rest and freedom to have a fulfilled life.
” I sought the Lord and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.”
Psalm 34:4
In all aspects of life, we must faithfully trust God to take care of us. There’s nothing that we need in life, that He cannot provide. There’s no sickness nor disease that He cannot heal. And, there’s no mental or emotional brokenness He cannot restore. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His powers are everlasting and His love and mercy endure forever.
“Casting all your care upon Him, for He careth for you.”
1 Peter 5:7
“There’s nothing that we need in life that He [God] cannot provide. There’s no sickness nor disease that He cannot heal. And, there’s no mental or emotional brokenness He cannot restore.”

Finding Recovery from Mental Disorders in Christ
Trusting Christ to overcome Depression and Anxiety takes creating and sustaining a prayer life of persistent prayers and supplications, as well as perseverance. And, it is imperative to have hope in Christ because, without hope in Him, finding recovery is not possible. You cannot hope for something if you don’t trust and believe in the subject or object that provides it to you.
When praying, you must be reverent to God and sincere and pour out your heart to Him, withholding nothing. Tell Him of all your worries, fears, and circumstances that seem hopeless to you and keep you bound. Then surrender all to Him and leave it there. After praying you will walk away with confidence and feel a sense of relief and peace of mind.
Meditating on scriptures specifically for depression and anxiety, especially the Psalms, inspires and encourages hope in Christ. As you see concrete examples of the many times the Lord delivered David from mental, emotional, and physical harm. It’s always easier for us to trust and hope in something when we’ve seen the evidence. David’s life experiences give us plenty to believe in.

Consequently, while waiting on God to overcome depression and anxiety, keep in mind that it may not happen overnight. Sometimes you may feel that He’s silent and not responding to you. But, rest assured He has His own timing to bring you healing and recovery. Therefore, you’ll need to practice endurance. Take note of David’s persistent prayers and supplications – you see that they were constant because He didn’t always receive deliverance right away; he had to persevere and wait on God’s timing. Don’t think of giving up hope in God.
“Hear me speedily, O Lord, my spirit faileth. Hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit. Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning. For in thee do I trust. Cause me to know the way wherein I should walk, for I lift up my soul unto thee.”
Psalm 143:7-8
As well, you must believe with all your heart, that He will deliver you. He knows what’s in your heart, and can tell if you lack faith. If you go to Him unbelieving, He will not respond. In His Word, He said that “Without faith, it is impossible to please Me.” So, just trust in Him, hope in Him, and believe in Him. And you will see that He will deliver you from depression and anxiety.
To conclude, it is important that Christians trust God to help them overcome depression and anxiety. He’s our only way to our recovery. Restoration will not happen overnight, therefore, we need to sustain a prayer life and be diligent and persistent in seeking the Lord’s help. Perseverance is key; it strengthens us and helps us to wait on His timing.
