How to Stay Motivated in Christ – Seven Ways

Staying motivated in Christ should be easy for Christians, right? After all, He’s our reason for living. So, why do we lack motivation in Him? Why do we become lackadaisical, disengaged, and disinterested in our Creator? I posit to you, that the reason is due to a lack of spiritual growth in the Lord. A lack of interest in seeking the Holy Spirit, daily, for wisdom and guidance in life. As we rely on our own understanding and abilities to create our own paths and successes in life.

God has given us the determination to make our own decisions in life, He does not force His will on us. So, sometimes we make choices and decisions for ourselves, without seeking God’s wisdom, knowledge, and guidance. We believe in our own strengths and abilities to realize our own successes, ignoring God’s power, control, and authority over our lives.

While living our lives creating successes and such, independent of God, we serve Him inadequately, offering Him the bare minimum. And are satisfied with this way of Christian living. So, there’s no reason or desire to become or stay motivated in Christ. We seemingly do well on our own. Well, until some unfortunate circumstance arises in our lives, then the motivation for God appears.

It is not enough to attend weekly church services, Bible studies, pay tithes, etc. But, we must actively live a daily Christ-centered life according to His will. Also, cultivate and grow an individual relationship with Him. Enabling the Holy Spirit to guide us. This is an imperative for Christians to stay motivated in Christ.

Below, I have shared seven ways to encourage you to stay motivated in Christ. If you establish and practice these ways, you will be able to stay motivated. Particularly, drawing close to Christ by establishing a prayer life, and reading the Word. This must be a daily routine in order to invite the Holy Spirit into your lives.

#1 Draw Close to Christ

We must draw close to Christ to maintain an individual relationship with Him, encouraging spiritual growth, so, we can stay motivated in Him. By this, we must establish a daily prayer life. Seeking God in prayer, sincerely, humbly, and reverently. Surrendering our hearts to Him, asking the Holy Spirit to come into our lives and grant us wisdom and guidance. Confessing and repenting of sin daily. Being conscious of the Holy Spirit at all times, honouring Him with our words, thoughts, and deeds. Draw close to Christ and He will draw close to you.

Psalm 91:14-16 “Because he has set his love upon me, therefore, will I deliver him. I will set him on high because he has known my name. He shall call upon me and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

Jeremiah 29:12-14 “Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me and find me when ye shall search for me with all your heart. And I will be found of you, saith the Lord.”

We must also study the Bible with the purpose to learn more about Him, and align our lives with the Word as the Word is the standard by which we must live.

1 Peter 2:2 “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the Word, that ye may grow.”

#2 Express Thanks and Gratitude

We must express thanks and gratitude to the Lord every day for His blessings as this is His will. Just the mere fact of waking up each morning is a blessing in itself. We didn’t wake ourselves up, He did. We must acknowledge that God is the one who has been blessing us with everything we need in life for sustenance. Also, expressing grace to others for His sake is honouring His Word and example. Importantly, we must praise, worship, and thank Him in the good and bad times.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 “In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

#3 Fellowship with Other Christians

Fellowshipping with other Christians, through God’s Word, encourages us, to keep going, thereby, helping us to stay motivated in Christ. Friends are a blessing from God. By finding the right ones, you will be able to inspire and encourage each other, keep each other accountable for unrighteousness, and minister to each other.

1 Peter 4:10 ” As every man hath received the gift, even so, minister the same one to another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.“

#4 Express Brotherly Love to Others

Expressing brotherly love and being in service to others is the will of God. Jesus specifically commands us to “love one another.” He demonstrated this to us when He came down in flesh. We do this will by extending help to our brothers and sisters in Christ who come to us in need. This is how we abide in service to one another. Doing this honours Him and helps us to stay motivated in Christ.

John 13:34 “A new commandment I give to you, that ye love one another as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”

#5 Worship and Praise Christ Through Music

Worshipping and praising Christ through music helps us to stay motivated in Him. Whether you choose to sing, dance, or play musical instruments, worshipping and praising Him in these ways will help us to connect with Him.

Psalms 150:3-5 “Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet, praise Him with the psaltery and harp. Praise Him with the timbrel and dance, praise Him with stringed instruments and organs. Praise Him upon the loud cymbals.”

#6 Be Conscious That God is Our Refuge and Strength in Times of Trouble

When we are conscious that God is our refuge and strength, it helps us to stay motivated in Christ. We are never alone, if we abide under His shadow, live in His will, and invite His Holy Spirit to walk with us daily. We will not fear but walk confidently, by faith, in the Lord to face life’s challenges. Knowing that we have God to sustain us and be our refuge and strength and fortress in times of trouble, is great motivation in itself.

Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in the time of trouble.”

Psalm 91:1-2 “He that dwells in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in Him will I trust.”

#7 Spend Time in Nature

When we spend time in nature, we surround ourselves with God’s creations. And this helps us to stay motivated in Christ. We acknowledge His power, control, and authority over everything. It reminds us that He gave life to every living thing: the trees, birds, animals, etc. Most importantly humans, who He made in His own image. Spending time in nature allows us to consider His unmatched power and supreme abilities to do anything. It gives us a boost of confidence in the Lord and admonishes us of His power to handle all of our concerns while meeting our life’s challenges.

Psalm 89:11-13“The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine. As for the world and the fullness, thereof, Thou has founded them. The north and the south, Thou has created. Thou has a mighty arm, strong is Thy hand, high is Thy right hand.”

Psalm 95:4-5 “In His hand are the deep places of the earth, the strength of the hills is His also. The sea is his, He made it, and His hands formed the dry land.”

To that end, staying motivated in Christ should not be challenging for us as Christians. When we consider He is the source of our strength and our very reason for living. Some Christians become complacent in the Lord because they are able to meet their needs independent of God’s help, and therefore, lack motivation in Him. But, if you practice the seven ways to stay motivated in Christ, it will help you to sustain your motivation in Him. Ultimately, by living a Christ-centered life, according to His will, you will continue to grow spiritually in Him.
