Our Identity in Christ Enables Us to Overcome
Our identity in Christ enables us to overcome all the trials and tribulations of this world. As Christians, our identity in Christ informs how we move and operate in this world; how we live and handle life’s challenges. In Christ, we have the peace, strength, and courage we need to face and overcome anything. When we understand and embrace who we are in Christ, it enables us to face any challenge and defeat it by faith. Likewise, not embracing our identity in Christ, means we decline our rightful place with Him, and therefore, become powerless and unequipped to handle life’s challenges. Ultimately, life will defeat us.
“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world, ye shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33

Our Identity in Christ
God is The sovereign God. Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent. With unequivocal power and control over the universe which He created. And because we are His creations, we identify with Him. When He came down to earth and died for our sins, Jesus overcame death, and ultimately, the world. Therefore, in Him, we are enabled to overcome this world, too, through the power of His Holy Spirit.
“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people. That ye should shew forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Which in time past were not a people but are now the people of God. Which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.”
1 Peter 2:9-10
In addition, the Apostle Peter delineates, in the above scripture, who we are in Christ. This tells us how God considers us. We are “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a peculiar people.” We are The Bride of Christ, the only group of people that God names royalty. We are a special people, with special privileges. For this reason, we must move and operate in this world with confidence and faith in God, without fear, to overcome any adversary we face.
“According as He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love. Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will.”
Ephesians 1:4-5
We are reminded that God chose us before the foundation of the world, and Jesus adopted us to Himself; therefore, we are His children. And because we are His children, we must live in complete surrender to Him, under His power, control, and authority. Paul admonishes us to be “holy and blameless before Him.” This means we must live a clean life and refrain from all sin and unrighteousness and be accountable to Him.
The Blessings of Identifying with Christ Jesus
Our identity in Christ enables us to receive all God’s goodness and His many blessings: His unconditional love, His forgiveness of our sins, and our inheritance of eternal life with Him in glory. And many more.
God’s Agape Love for Us
Because we are identified with Christ, we have His agape love: unconditional, unchanging, and everlasting; unlike any other love, we’ve experienced from anyone else. His love is unconditional because it is not contingent upon any good we do, nor any bad to have it withheld. He cannot stop loving us because He is not a human God with human feelings and emotions which change based on circumstances. God wants us to love like Him, and when His Holy Spirit changes us, and we come into our fullness in Christ, we will have the ability to love like Him. Therefore, our identity in Christ allows us to be loved by Him forevermore.
God’s Forgiveness of Our Sins
Further, with His riches in mercy and fullness of grace, God forgives us of our sins and forgets about them. When He forgives our sins, He cleanses us from all unrighteousness, justifies us and renews our minds. Since God forgives our sins, it enables us to forgive others who have wronged us. And this is a commandment of Jesus, that we forgive others who trespass against us. Without God’s forgiveness, we would still be living in darkness and not knowing the truth. But because we now live and walk in the light, and are identified with Christ, it enables us to overcome all things that seek to harm us.
The Blessed Assurance of Our Inheritance of Eternal Life
As a result of Jesus dying for our sins and granting us salvation by His wonderful grace, and our identification with Him, we have the blessed assurance of inheritance of eternal life with Him in glory. A promise made to us when He saved and redeemed us unto Himself. A promise that was given to us by faith, enables us to overcome this world and receive our inheritance of eternal life.
“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. In whom ye also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise. Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory.”
Ephesians 1:13-14
Heaven is our inheritance, our eternity; a paradise reserved only for the children of God, the Bride of Jesus Christ. Therefore, we should recognize what a blessing and honour it is to be identified with Christ. And express gratitude to Him every day for this resolute reward, which cannot be rescinded.
“To an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled, and that fadeth not away; reserved in heaven for you. Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time.”
1 Peter 1:4
Jesus’ Manifested Power Gives Us Hope to Overcome
Considering Jesus’ manifested power of raising the dead, healing the sick, casting out demons, deliverance, restoration, etc., we have tangible evidence of the workings of His power. Hence, the manifestation of Jesus Christ and His manifested power, give us hope to overcome all our tribulations in life. Because once we serve Him righteously, His Holy Spirit will dwell within us, enabling us to fight any battle and become victorious.
“O, taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in Him.”
Psalm 34:8
Seeking Refuge in Christ Enables Us to Overcome
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart. And ye shall find rest unto your souls.“
Matt 11:28-30
Think about it, the only sovereign living God, Creator of the universe, and almighty in power has called us to find rest in Him. What an honour for us! When we surrender our whole lives to the Lord and seek refuge in Him, it gives us hope and enables us to overcome our trials and tribulations. As well, it gives us peace and comfort knowing that He has full power and control over our situations.

Consequently, our identity in Christ enables us to seek refuge in Him when we face life’s challenges. He never forsakes us, leaving us alone and unequipped to fight our battles. He equips us, through the Holy Spirit, with His wisdom, strength, and guidance. And, He instils His peace in us to comfort us while enduring. He created us to depend on Him and expects that we call upon Him for help in times of trouble. And every time we conquer and overcome a trial with His help, it increases our hope to overcome our next challenge in life, without fear or discouragement.
To conclude, our identity in Christ enables us to overcome life’s trials and tribulations and grants us eternal life with Him. When we know and understand our place in Christ, we move differently in this world with faith and confidence in Him who has the sovereign power, control, and authority over everything that concerns us. As Christians, we need to embrace our identity in Christ, and as such, live for Him to keep our identity.
