Why is the Wisdom of God Important to Christians?
Why is it important for Christians to have the wisdom of God? First off, what is wisdom? According to Dictionary.com, wisdom is “the quality or state of being wise; knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action.” In other words, wisdom is knowing what’s right and doing it. But, how can we know what’s right and by whose standards should we judge what’s right? This is a question we should all ask ourselves before we make decisions.
I think, as Christians, we underestimate the importance of seeking and having the wisdom of God. Perhaps, because we are used to doing things for ourselves and seeking God’s help only when we run into trouble. However, the wisdom of God is actually a gift from Him. We all have the capacity to know what’s right from wrong, but our decisions are usually made based on our emotional state. But, until we get God’s wisdom, we won’t have His mind, His knowledge and understanding of life and situations and circumstances therein. And how to handle them with good judgment.
Therefore, in this post, I will talk a little about the wisdom of God, and show how we get knowledge and understanding from His wisdom, the importance of His wisdom, and how to gain His wisdom.
“But, we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory. Which none of the princes of this world knew, for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.”
1 Corinthians 2:7-8
So, the above scripture proves that when man relies on his own wisdom, he makes the wrong decisions because they’re not based on righteousness and truth. Whose righteousness and truth? God’s! Paul states, that if they had known the wisdom of God, they would know that Jesus was the son of God, that He was Christ and they wouldn’t have crucified Him. To lack God’s wisdom is to go through life with no solid direction, without a compass. Lots of detours and confusion and wrong decisions.
On the other hand, relying on His wisdom keeps us on a path of righteousness and helps us to make good judgment calls and decisions based on His righteousness. Ultimately, having the wisdom of God is having His mind and thoughts, we can never fail because Jesus never fails in anything. This is a good way to live, living with the wisdom of God as our guide in life.
We Get Knowledge and Understanding From the Wisdom of God

When He created this world, He knew and understood all the intricacies of everything in order for His creations to be successful. God knew where everything would fit perfectly and where it would not. Also, He knew all the foreseeable problems that would arise from His choices and decisions. The Lord sees and understands how things work in ways that we are incapable of doing. His wisdom is unparalleled and beyond our comprehension. Hence, we see things through His eyes and understand through His mind. For this reason, we must rely on His wisdom to guide and instruct us throughout our lives.
“The Lord sees and understands how things work in ways that we are incapable of doing. His wisdom is unparalleled and beyond our comprehension.”

Additionally, God’s wisdom gives us knowledge and understanding. His wisdom is whose we need to navigate this chaotic world in which we live today, more than ever. In our weaknesses, we find strength in the Lord. In our fears, we find courage and confidence in Him. In our indecisions and confusion in life’s challenges, we can find God’s wisdom too. And from His wisdom, knowledge, and understanding, to help us resolve any challenging situations that befall us.
“For the Lord gives wisdom, out of His mouth comes knowledge and understanding.”
Proverbs 2:6
“In our weaknesses, we find strength in the Lord. In our fears, we find courage and confidence in Him. In our indecisions and confusions in life’s challenges, we can find God’s wisdom too…to help us resolve any challenging situations that befall us.”

The Importance of God’s Wisdom
“Get wisdom, get understanding, forget it not. Neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee. Love her and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom, and with all thy getting, get understanding. Exalt her and she shall promote thee, she shall bring thee to honour when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace, a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee. Take fast hold of instruction, let her not go. Keep her, for she is thy life.”
Proverbs 4:5-13
With respect to the above verses, we learn the importance of God’s wisdom. Wisdom preserves us, gives us understanding, brings us honour, and delivers us. Therefore, we must embrace it; wisdom is our life. It guides us to eternity. The wisdom of God is important for us because it teaches us to live justly, righteously, and to have good judgment.
And, His wisdom teaches us how to be just and equitable in situations of injustice and prudent in our decision-making for the best outcomes in situations, as well as for conflict resolution. God gives His infinite wisdom to those who live righteously for Him: refraining from evil and doing good. And seeking and embracing His wisdom, and fearing Him. This is the importance of God’s wisdom to Christians.
“Happy is the man that finds wisdom and the man that gets understanding.”
Proverbs 3:13
How to Gain the Wisdom of God
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God that gives to all men liberally and upbraids not. And it shall be given him.”
James 1:5
To gain God’s wisdom, we must pray and ask Him for it. King Solomon prayed to God and asked Him for His wisdom in order to lead His people justly and righteously. Solomon knew leading God’s people was a great responsibility, one which he couldn’t accomplish without God’s wisdom guiding him. He knew he lacked wisdom and acknowledged his weaknesses and insufficiencies to carry out the kingship in a just and righteous way.
See, when we live our lives for Christ, His Holy Spirit lets us know things and speaks to us. This is how Solomon came to the realization that He needed to pray specifically for God’s wisdom. And because God’s Holy Spirit was intuned with Solomon’s spirit, He knew his motive for seeking His wisdom. So, God granted him wisdom, a measure of which he never bestowed upon anyone else, ever. God was pleased that Solomon asked for wisdom, instead of wealth and riches.
“Now, we have receive, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God, that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth. Comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”
1 Corinthians 2:12-13
“Solomon knew leading God’s people was a great responsibility, one in which he couldn’t accomplish without God’s wisdom guiding him. He knew Gods’ wisdom is what it took to be an effective leader.”

“But, the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him. Neither can he know them because they are spiritually discerned. But, he that is spiritual, judgeth all things. Ye he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct Him. But, we have the mind of Christ.”
1 Corinthians 2:14;16
Consequently, to have the wisdom of God is to have the mind of Christ, which He gives to us by His Holy Spirit. If we do not live for Christ righteously, we will remain in our natural, carnally minded state spiritually detached from Christ. This is to Christians’ detriment because He will not commune with us. The Holy Spirit only connects with us spiritually when we are pure and holy ourselves. He will speak to us and we will be able to discern His voice. Thus, we must commit to living holy, righteous lives unto God; then when we pray for wisdom, He will grant it to us.
To that end, the importance of God’s wisdom to Christians is to give us knowledge and understanding of what is true and right and to do it. With God’s wisdom, we get the mind of Christ, so that we can make understand situations and make good judgement calls as He would. God wants us to have wisdom, so we must be holy and righteous so that our spirit can align with His Holy Spirit and we can discern His voice when He speaks to us.
